Savaged Lands is a love story set in war-torn Russia. Hitler’s army has just moved into Kiev and a young Russian girl, Natasha, meets a Hungarian soldier who is reluctantly fighting for the Germans.

As the war progresses, we learn about Natasha and her family and their trials. Natasha’s sister Lisa and her brother Nilolai, their parents and grandparents all living in a tiny apartment, braving the harsh winters as they survive on increasingly meager rations, avoiding Nazi bullets and just ‘waiting and hoping’.

I really admired the prose, which was excellent, as well as the attention to detail. You get engrossed in the heart-wrenching love story and begin to ‘hope and wait’ yourself!

I’d recommend this book to everyone!
